Blog: Stepping Stones

I love stepping stones. In my hill-walking days, whenever a burn or small river came into view, I had to get to the other side of it, often only for the challenge of choosing the right stones to step on to get there and, when the jump was too long for my wee legs, looking round for a stone to fill the gap so I could move forward. It was fun! And, yes, sometimes I got soaked – but that was fun, too.

My actual stepping stone days are long gone – smooth dry paths only or I would literally ‘break a leg’!

But I still love the idea of stepping stones. It’s how we move through life. It’s we build up relationships with people. It’s what God places in our life, I believe to draw us towards him in faith and then draw us closer to him.

He knows when the next step is ‘a step too far’ and finds every way he can, I believe, to find just the right stone for us to move forward. Sometimes we slip. Sometimes we leap instead of waiting, looking for another stone to help us. And then – it’s not always fun.

I thank God for all the ‘stepping stones’, especially the ‘living stones’ (1 Peter 2.5) he has placed in my life to take me across many streams. And I thank Him for the surest, most solid, most well-placed of stones that is Jesus without whom I would forever be guddling about in the water.
