Stepping Stones Blog

I love stepping stones. In my hill-walking days, whenever a burn or small river came into view, I had to get to the other side of it, often only for the challenge of choosing the right stones to step on to get there and, when the jump was too long for my wee legs, looking round for a stone to fill the gap so I could move forward. It was fun! And, yes, sometimes I got soaked - but that was fun, too.

My actual stepping stone days are long gone - smooth dry paths only or I would literally 'break a leg'!

But I still love the idea of stepping stones. It's how we move through life. It's we build up relationships with people. It's what God places in our life, I believe to draw us towards him in faith and then draw us closer to him.

He knows when the next step is 'a step too far' and finds every way he can, I believe, to find just the right stone for us to move forward. Sometimes we slip. Sometimes we leap instead of waiting, looking for another stone to help us. And then - it's not always fun.

I thank God for all the 'stepping stones', especially the 'living stones' (1 Peter 2.5) he has placed in my life to take me across many streams. And I thank Him for the surest, most solid, most well-placed of stones that is Jesus without whom I would forever be guddling about in the water.

Thoughts on King Nebuchadnezzar

I was preaching yesterday on Daniel Chapter 4 where King Nebuchadnezzar oversteps the mark and imagines himself to be the ruler of the world. God is gracious, quarantines Nebuchadnezzar in a period of madness then restores him when Nebuchadnezzar repents.

I never cease to be amazed at how relevant these seemingly ‘old, old stories are to the present day. I was reflecting on the famous phrase ‘power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely’. The corruption is not simply financial or judicial but deeply spiritual: power is like a drug, a poison that corrupts the soul and leads essentially to at least a ‘moral madness’ if not an actual madness. At the moment, many are wondering, with reference to our current ‘madness’ – ‘where will this end’? And when? And how? The temptation is to wish and even pray for a ‘removal from office’ of those involved, especially given the immense amount of damage they have caused. I would be a miracle if the ‘madmen and madwomen’ ‘took a turn to themselves. But what a testimony it would be to the power and grace of God if they not only ‘stopped sinning’, but confessed their sin and chose and found ways of atoning for it. That might mean simply submitting to whatever ‘punishment’ the authorities placed upon them and from that ‘place of punishment’ doing as much good as possible. Sounds like a pipe dream. Yet …… let us pray that it happens. And happens soon.
